Scientistshave grouped Microscopes into two major types that is the electronand optical microscopes. An electron microscope uses beam of electronto magnify small objects instead of light. However, an opticalmicroscope is an instrument that uses light to be able to expand thesize of an image of a small object, so that it people can see itusing the naked eye. Light microscope is also known as to as photonor light microscope. It is consists of a condenser, an eyepiece, anobjective lens, as well as a light source that is replaceable using arecording instrument. Zacharias Janssen and Hans first discovered thelight microscope around the 16th century. It has several advantagesand one disadvantage.
Itwas first invented by two Dutch men a father and son (Ganguly 60). Itwas a simple device that its magnification power was three to ninetimes bigger the size of the original object. It comprised of twolenses and two tubes. The tubes were place inside each other and eachof the tube had a lens attached to it. They placed one of the lensesnear the top of the tube that was bi – convex in shape and theother at the bottom of the tube Plano convex in shape (Ganguly 80). Aperson could modify the focus of the compound microscopes by slidingany of the tubes. In the 17thcentury, Robert Hooke and Anton von Leeuweenhoek modified themicroscope by reducing the focal lengths to achieve a magnificationof 270 times the original object and people used it to view smallorganisms such as bacteria’s (Ganguly 780). They used paired convexlenses. Different scientists kept on modifying the microscopes, todaythe magnification lens has been improved, and the magnificationability is about 200, 000 times the size of the original object.
Thereare several advantages of using an optical lens. One is that they arecheap in comparison to the electron microscope, because they uselight through the glass lens to be able view the specimen (Ford 50).They are light and smaller compared to electron microscope hencepeople can move them with ease from one place to the other. Inaddition, they are very easy to set them up. The images formed fromthe light microscope have colors obtained from the light. However,the colors are gotten from the stains rather than nature itself.Another advantage is it is possible to view images from a lightmicroscope with a lot of ease using the naked human eyes. It is alsopossible to view living organism through a light microscope and seethe different developments taking place, for example the division ofcells (Ford 53). It is easy to prepare the specimen that people wantto view compared to the electron microscope specimens that use harshpreparation methods. However, the only disadvantage it has is thatthe electron microscopes have a higher resolution than lightmicroscope this is because for the light microscope after 1000timesthe image becomes blurred (Ford 54).
Fromthe above the light microscope has been undergoing different changessince its origin in the 16thcentury. It has been noted that it has several advantages over theelectron microscope due to its ability to use light to view objects.It is more flexible to move around with and its ability to see thedifferent biological process of different specimen takes place. Themain disadvantage it has is that it cannot magnify an object beyond1000 times of its original specimen.
