USAObesity and Overweight
Obesityis increasing and more people in the United States are obese morethan other countries. The development of technology and the shift toservice industry from production has led to prevalence of obesity(Bailey,2006). Thispaper summarizes on the findings of obesity in U.S and the criteriaused to deal with the problem. This paper discusses the overview ofobesity in USA, the rates and prevalence of the overweight people aswell as the expected results of studies done before. It shows howpeople should have a healthy lifestyle and fight against thecomplications of being overweight. The age and sex of individualsdetermine how prone they are to overweight. This essay covers theapproach, methods and methodology used to collect and justify theoutcomes. The approach justifies the information recorded to beaccurate and precise to. Lifestyle changes and increasing economicempowerment has simply exaggerated the problem of obesity. Theknowledge and education on obesity has not helped much as people havebusy daily schedules that hinder them from preparing healthy food athome but rather opt to go for the highly processed foods Chambers,Wakley & Staffordshire, 2002). People continue to eat unhealthyfoods and adult males are at a higher risk of being obese than theirfemale counterparts. Overweight and obese conditions lead to seriousdiseases that if not treated can lead to death. Overweight peoplehave low esteem and lack self confidence in front of other healthpeople causing them face depression. Obesity, is a worldwide problemnot only in the U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) claims that inthe next couple of years more people above the age of fifteen will beobese. It states that around 2.3 billion will be obese and 700million more by 2015. However, in the last decade Germany and theUnited Kingdom have reported to have less cases of obesity.Overweight causes many health complications such as cardiovasculardiseases, cancers, diabetes among others (Calle, 2003).
Qualitativeand Quantitative findings
InUSA adults are more affected by obesity than children. An estimated68.5 percent of adults have weight problems while 34.9 percent ofthem are already obese. Only 31.8 of children and adolescence areoverweight and obese. The disparities displayed by overweight andobese people are due to their economic status, gender and age(Oliver, 2006). Directives used for defining overweight and obeseconditions are important for health practitioners during treatmentand prescription of the victims. Weight is not what determines theindividual is overweight but the BMI (Acs, Lyles & Stanton2007).The level of a person’s BMI accurately determines thecondition of the adult. It is important in identifying people withhigher affinity of obesity. People with unstable BMI levels are athigher risk of having cardiovascular disease because their centraladiposity is increased. The location of the body fats also affectshow the health problems develop. Moreover, some people from someethnic groups are more prone to obesity and overweight than others(Acs, Lyles & Stanton 2007).
Statisticalanalysis and data collection should be carried out consecutively togive the theoretical sample of the data. The participants areadolescents between the ages of 11 and 19, children between 5 to 10years and adults between 20 to 70 years. Both quantitative andqualitative designs are appropriate to having a conclusion of thisresearch (Calle, 2003). Using a mix of various methodologies, theresearch will be able to give a comprehensive conclusion for theresearch. Researchers have to make the most suitable decision thatfits the complexity of the reality of the study. This affirms thatthe adopted methodology is essential in analyzing the rampant issueof overweight and obesity in the U.S. Therefore, the three groupsinvolved on the study as well as inclusion of their ethnicbackgrounds, gender and ages help identify the group of people thatare most vulnerable to overweight and obesity (Bailey,2006).
Thereis an inverse relationship between the body-mass index of anindividual with obesity and health complications that arise from it.Data and information helps the government as well as organizationsand individuals to deal with overweight and obesity (Flegal e.al,2002). Since data is quantitative, both qualitative and quantitativedata analysis methods are used to analyze data. The number ofoverweight people significantly grew from 35.1% to 35.1% by 2002. Thenumbers decreased to 33% in 2010 but the trend changes after 2010whereby the numbers triples. The numbers of men becoming overweightwas fluctuating as sometimes it goes up other times it goes down. Forwomen the numbers observed through a long period of time remained thesame (Oliver, 2006)
Methodologyused and expected outcomes
Recentstudies have shown that several factors are important to collectingdata and methodology used will predict expected results. The NationalHealth and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) give precise data.It engages subjects during the research and produces most accurateresults. This approach has been used for a long time now and is mostconvenient as it also gives the percentage rates of individualsaccording to their gender, age and ethnic background. NHANES isefficient as it also gives the disparities that determine the rate ofobesity and overweight among the adults as well as the children. Italso shows the costs that cover the treatment of the healthcomplicated problems by the patients and prevalence is important atthis stage (Flegal e.al, 2002). Prevalence assists in showing thetrends of obesity in the U.S for the previous couple of years up tothe present. For example it entails collection of data from 2009 tothe present time clearly indicating the percentage rates. It alsoinvolves the risk rates likely to occur to the overweight and obesepeople like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other healthcomplications. (Ogden 2012).
Prevalenceinvolves trends that show the model which explains how age, genderand ethnic background affect the risk of obesity. This methodcollects data from subjects of unspecified group of people. However,the samples have to involve people of all kinds with differentfactors like their sex, age and ethnicity (Chambers, Wakley &Staffordshire, 2002). For the best outcome the method of datacollection should involve adult, adolescents and children. Theyshould also be from different races for better statistical analysis.This method provides accurate results after comparing the BMI levelsof the participants (Chambers, Wakley & Staffordshire, 2002).
Implicationsof the outcomes
Theresults show the outcome of varied prevalence rates. There is adistinct difference between increasing and the reducing rates of newcases of overweight and obesity. The results indicate the effects ofobesity within the United States of America and explain the causes.Data collected using prevalence is reliable and valid as it involvessampling of overweight individuals that are children, adults andadolescents. Interviews are used to engage the participants who aremore likely to give genuine response for the research Chambers,Wakley & Staffordshire, 2002). Before the method is conducted,the participants are given sheets with detailed information that givethem consent. Participants are obliged to complete their part asotherwise the reason is indicated and explained. Most adults areprone to obesity because they concentrate more on their work andoccupation giving very little or no attention to their health. Alsothose who stay long hours watching television or in front of theircomputers are at a risk. Adolescents and children who take lots ofjunk food also result in being overweight and obese (Oliver,2006).
Everyyear obese and overweight people use billions in the National HealthServices to treat their conditions (Chambers, Wakley &Staffordshire, 2002). Obesity and overweight is a health hazard to ahuman being and the States have declared it a public health problem.Citizens of the U.S should struggle to have a healthy lifestyle andparents to be more cautious with the diets served at home.Adolescents should also be educated and informed on the dangers ofeating too much junk. Education on exercises should be wide andpeople should engage more in physical activities. In companies wherethe employees are required to be sitted most of the time, physicalactivities should be encouraged by keeping a record of their targetweight to push for healthier employees and hence lower prevalencerates of obesity in the U.S.
