MillenniumCohort Study’s report revealed the findings of a group in Britainthat followed the behavior of 19000 children born in 2000 and 2001.The findings showed that childrenwho had communicative problems and emotional problems spent more thanthree hours on television, videos or DVDs on a daily basis instead ofplaying age-appropriate games.
TheM.I.T professor and technology author Sherry Turkle arguesthat parents should not leave their children to playing withtechnological devices, like iPad, whenever they feel lonely. Shefurther advice parents to be keen on their children behaviors inorder to realize when they are lonely learning about loneliness isan important class in a child’s early development stage.
Today, children are exposed to new technologies, even before they startattending their preschool programs. Quite an appreciable number ofchildren have an easy access to mobile devices and varioustechnological devices such as tablets, iPads and computers from theirhomes. Most parents purchase these devices for their children whilethey are still at tender ages as well as train them on how to usethem. In fact, many companies have designed many technology devices, which offer several studies and games for children. Although the newtechnology and children’s use of these devices may offer effectivelearning tools, they may also have adverse physical and educationaleffects on children when used inappropriately. Parents should notexpose young children, who are not yet cognitively developed pasttheir pre-operational stage, to technological devices because theymay be exposed to physical and health development problems.Additionally, children who spend most of their time on Smartphone, computers and tablets, have a high likelihood of developing backs, eyes and wrist problems. This is a clear indication that technologydevice is not only very useful to children, but is also harmful tothem as well. It forces children to spend most of their free time athome instead of engaging in outdoor activities that are beneficial totheir physical well-being. Moreover, the device has a high likelihoodof making such children have few social interaction skills. Advancein science and technology may slow down a child’s physicalinteraction ability in an enormous way. For instance, it may force achild to only make and find friends through the internet rather thanface to face.
Duringmy childhood, technology was not advanced as it is today in fact, Ionly used a technology device when I was 15 years old. Playing withmy neighbor’s friends on the play ground was my chief recreationactivity. Playing with my friends made me happy and joyful always. However, nowadays technology has advanced in an immense mannerchildren use technological devices and play computer games at home.It is rare to see children playing games in the yard. As a result, they rarely have time to communicate and interact with otherchildren hence, slowing down their development.
Intoday’s society people spend most of their time on mobile phones, even when they are partying in a restaurant. This hinders theircommunication and socializing to some extent. Additionally, mostpeople dependent on technology devices to accomplish various tasks. My friend once confessed to me that he always feels uncomfortable ifhe fails to see his mobile phone for more than 10 minutes. This is aclear indication that most people are extremely dependent ontechnology device. If it is hard for an adult to control his or hermind to leave out this technology device, then it is extra difficultfor children to control their use over these devices. The devices mayaffect children’s performance, learning, and development in anegative manner if they are in used inappropriately. Therefore, parents should take the responsibility to protect their children frominappropriate contents that these devices may contain at an earlyage. Again, parents need to encourage their children to indulge invarious outdoor games and other exercises with their friends.
Inconclusion, parents need to sensitize and inform their children onthe disadvantages that come along with this technology with an aim ofdrawing their attention away from the device. It is of immensesignificance that children indulge themselves in outdoor activitiesin order to have a proper and health physical development. They alsoneed to interact with other children in order to develop strongcommunication and interaction skills. Indeed, when children rely ontheir own ability they have better development than when they rely ontechnology device.
