SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS 4SOCIALIMPLICATIONS
Massshooting in elementary schools and campuses among other places hascontinued to grow in the recent years. These shootings including therecent incident at Paine College and other similar incidents inAurora and Connecticut have led to the devastating loss of innocentlives, leaving behind massive impacts of the community, family andfriends. From sociologist perspective, these incidents may resultfrom a psychiatric condition, or a dysfunctional social environment. On the other hand, the public tends to blame the government forfailure to enforce effective measures, and also blame the media sincethey believe that it is the source of crime and violence. However, the sociologist point of view indicates that case of mass shootingresult from societal factors, as well as, an individual.
Inseeking answers to the horrible shooting at Paine College, debate ongun control has been triggered. In order to prevent mass shooting andviolence, the government amended and passed legislations on guncontrol. However, the efforts of gun control date back a century ago,but the current incidents have called amendment to ensure strictergun laws. Currently, a wide variety of gun laws are “presumptivelylawful,” and most include bans of gun possession by dangerouspersons such as mentally ill and felons laws imposing conditions andqualifications on gun sales, which could include licensing andbackground checks laws imposing conditions and qualifications on gunsales and safe storage laws to prevent gun accidents (Carter, 2012).Despite these efforts, there is much evidence that the mass shootingin schools, mall, campuses and public places have continued toescalate.
Theaftermath of the Paine College shooting indicates that mass mediaplays a key role in increasing crime and violence. According to thearticle by Blindermay (2014), one of the persons interviewed recountsa similar incident he saw on TV during the shooting. Studies haveestablished that mass media including television, video games, newspapers, films, radio and magazines among others impacts thesociety by contributing to the current increased crime and violence. There is much evidence that U.S. television and other forms ofentertainment expose people to diverse ways of life, which tend tosend powerful messages that influence behavior. Most of theperpetrators of these shootings are said to be avid customers ofvideo games among other forms of media entertainment. For thisreason, many sociologist and behavioral psychologists hold that theexposure to media violence, sex and crime films has resulted toattitudinal changes and behavioral impacts on young children andteenagers, resulting to an increase in crime and violence.
Inconclusion, the article by Blindermay portrays how mass shooting andgun violence has become a persistent problem in the United States. Ifound the article informative since it raises public attention onpublic shooting. Since a similar incident is more likely to occuragain, the government, public and institutions should collaborate toensure that effective measures are implemented. Academic institutionshave an obligation to ensure that students or persons carryingfirearms are restricted from entering by conducting thorough checkups on all entrances. Since many studies have linked mass murder withmental disorder, mental institution and family or relatives of thementally ill person should ensure that proper treatment is acquiredin order to reduce similar cases. Lastly, the article hashighlighted important challenges and societal factors contributing tomass shooting, and how they can be enforced to ensure effectivestrategies and solutions are put in place in dealing with mass murderand gun violence.
