PROJECT DRIVERS ANALYSIS ON EXTREME ENGINEERING: BUILDING HONG KONG`S AIRPORT
Project Drivers Analysis onExtreme Engineering: Building Hong Kong`s Airport
For 16 years of service, Hong Kong International Airport had beenconsidered as one of the most busiest passenger airport and cargogetaway in the world. It was made open for public transportation on1998, which also played an important role on regional trans-shipmentcenter, passenger hub, and gateway for destinations in China andother nearby countries in Asia. In relation with the business casethat had been addressed to the construction of the Hong KongInternational Airport, several project drivers have been consideredfocusing on the problems which relates a distant gap between theactual and the desired condition that need to be done on the courseof the project management.
The first thing that have been considered in the planning andpreparation of the business project was the timing and period of itsactual construction. The construction of the Hong Kong InternationalAirport lasted for about 7 years. The construction should have beentaken for a decade, however, due to the sophisticated height ofmodern technologies as well as brilliant engineers that we have onthe 20th century, it only took about 7 years. It tookquite a longer period to finish the construction since this airportwas actually situated on a water surface. With regards to itsconstruction, it was the usual accidents that have been observed uponlanding of the planes on a land-based airport. It has also beendefined that Hong Kong has a very compacted area for which largeconstruction are not possible. Hence, Hong Kong which have a limitedarea for its construction, lead them to make a proposed project onconstructing it above the surface of the South China Sea. Severalproblems have been encountered towards the construction of thisairport, however, due to modern technologies that we have at present,as well as the professional engineers that we have, this project planhave successfully materialized.
One important parameter in assessing the overall quality andeffectiveness of one`s project is the construction of the Strengths,Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis. As it isdefined, SWOT Analysis enumerates the different positive and negativeimpacts brought by the implementation and the construction of theproject. As for this topic, we will be discussing the impacts broughtby the construction of the Hong Kong Airport and try to enumerate itspositive and negative feedbacks.
Table 1. SWOT Analysis for the Construction of Hong KongInternational Airport.
Hong Kong Airport is equipped with outstanding services and facilities
Center of cargo transportation
Has a good reputation
Has an excellent accessibility to other countries
It has a limitation on its construction
It lacks representative airlines from different countries all over the world
Focused on cargo shipping and transportation from different parts of the world
Expansion of market system
Increased competition in Product Requirements Document (PRD)
Affected by the development of Express Rail Link in Hong Kong as form of transportation
For its Strengths, Hong Kong Airport has been the center of cargoimportation in the world. It has also been considered as one of thebusiest airports in the world, thus, the positive feedback for it isthat many people appreciate and trust the quality of service thatthis organization has given for every customer of the airport. Itwould be a plus factor for the organization to hear positivefeedbacks from its customers. To see your customers to appreciateyour service was more of a recognition that you have accomplished inyour everyday activities and that Moreover, aside from itsoutstanding services, the Hong Kong Airport is also equipped withmodern facilities and equipments that will truly encourage morepassengers and traders to recognize its quality services it hadprovided.
As for its Weaknesses, the Hong Kong Airport may have its limitationon its construction. We knew that we have modern technologies thatwere very beneficial for the construction of the airport, plusprofessional engineers who have planned the project very carefully. However, who would have know its limits as a structural building, itwas situated above the South China Sea, which is more dangerous ifyou would think twice focusing on the safety of its customers. Moreover, Hong Kong Airport may have lack representative or delegateairlines all over the world. Hence, its interaction and relationshipto every country in the different parts of the world may have yet tobe accomplished and established a uniform and smooth backgroundworkplace considering the means of trade and transportation.
The Opportunities being brought by the construction of the Hong KongAirport have focused mainly on cargo transportation to differentplaces in the world. From this scenario, more job opportunities havebeen given to people as well as professional workers and engineerswho would further increase and develop their services to itscustomers. Moreover, the Hong Kong Airport has also benefited fromexpanding the market system through the development of Sky Pier. Morebusiness entrepreneurs, either public or private agencies, haverecognized its susceptibility to engage in different marketingbusinesses, aside from cargo and passenger transportation.
Finally, for its possible Threats brought by the airport, there wouldbe possible increase in competition with regards to its ProductRequirements Document (PRD). Since Hong Kong Airport has beenconnected with various International Airports from all over theworld, more conflicts may arise regarding the delivery, documentationand transport of cargo, since every country has its own set of rulesand regulations regarding the transportation of different goods andcommodities. Also, it would further need much more time and effort tocomplete the different requirements imposed by different countries.Another possible threat is that the airport may have been affected bythe development of Express Rail Link to PRD. The Express Rail Linkaimed to enhance the connectivity between Hong Kong and the mainland,as well as to develop its economic and cultural activities. By these, there would be possible competition with regards to cargo andpassenger transportation. Beyond everything that has been introducedin the SWOT Analysis, the Hong Kong International Airport wouldcontinue to offer improved and high quality services and means oftransportation to all of its customers nationwide.
