LebronJames Vogue Magazine Cover
Oneglance at Lebron James’ cover image on the vogue and I am instantlyamused because I feel that equality is finally becoming a reality inthe United States. The Vogue magazine is an internationallyrecognized magazine that has been in operation for 115 years. However, James Lebron was the first African American to appear on itscover. Besides, he is dressed in short-sleeved basketball outfit, aswell as standing on a steady pause as he dribbles the ball to depicthis expertise in the game. Similarly, he appears to be cheering orputting a serious face to prove his determination and expertise inthe game (Elliot 1). In addition, I also thought of the cover imageimpressive because it features two superstars who are at the top oftheir career (Shea 1).
However, many critics claimed that Lebron’s cover image was memorable forall the wrong reasons. For example, some commentators claimed thatthe image depicted the idea of a huge and dangerous African American, putting on a mean face, as well as showing his teeth like a gorilla.Others claimed that the image was racist because Lebron’s image ofclutching Bundchen`s small waist is a stereotype of successfulAfrican Americans who marry white girls as their trophy wives. Thisview differs my perception because I interpreted the issue of holdinga white supermodel is an illustration that African Americans areequal to the whites. Equally, my perception that Lebron appearing onthe cover of Vogue magazine was racist is ridiculous since it showsequality (Elliot 1). For 115 years, James Lebron was the firstAfrican American to appear on the cover of the magazine, whichindicated that equality is a quality that almost everyone admires. One of the commentators also claimed that the image is clear evidencethat Vogue has few colored senior editors otherwise, one of themcould have realized the controversy and stopped the company frompublishing it (Shea 1). Lastly, some commentators claimed that thestance, the serious mile and the act of dribbling ball associates theblack athletes with drugs and violence. Nevertheless, I think thestance, the outfit, and smile is indicators of his vigor and skillsin the field.
