Impactsof Oil on the Environment
Purpose:To evaluate the key environmental issues caused by oil on theenvironment and their solution.
Thesis:Emission of greenhouse gases that cause climate change and oil spillsare the major problems causes by fossil fuels in the modern world.
The environmental pollution caused by oil spills and greenhouse gases affect virtually all forms of life.
The effect of oil pollution varies with different factors, including the length of exposure, concentration of oil products, and routine of exposure Heinberg, R. (2014).
Review of the main points
Greenhouse gases and climate change
Emission of greenhouse gases has increased the global temperature by 0.7 0 C and a further increase of approximately 1.4-5.8 0 C are projected by the year 2050 (Heinberg, 2014).
The problem of oil spills
Oil spills in the oceans and seas, especially in the Arctic are likely to increase in the near future given the fact that about 5 % of oil reserves are found in the Arctic (SeaWeb, 2014).
Although oil is a lubricant of the world economy, its negative effects on the environment should be addressed through the concerted efforts of all the stakeholders (Biello, 2007).
Solution to the issue of emission of greenhouse gases
The use of alternative sources of energy in industries and the transport sector is the major solution to the issue of the emission of greenhouse gases (Woods & Bernstein, 2014).
Solution to the problem of oil spills
The problem of oil spills can be resolved using polymers that have the capacity to absorb oils 40 times their weight (Woods & Bernstein, 2014).
Emission of greenhouse gases and oil spills are the key problems caused by fossil fuels in the modern society.
The two challenges threaten human survival and increase the risk of loss of biodiversity.
