I handle the Same Situation Today 6
Ourgroup is made up of five members. Two members are Indians, two areChinese and one is a Saudi. The two Indian plays the leading roleowing to the fact that they are having a competitive workingbackground and they are more fluent in English. In most cases the twoChinese and the one Indian are the dormant members of the group. Thetwo Indians are like the commanders while the rest of the members aresoldiers. This means that decision and opinion form the two Indianscarries more weight than from the other three members, who are leftto fulfill the task the commander’s order.
Strengthsand Weaknesses of our GroupStrengthsof the Group
Thecommon objectives of our small group it to achieve excellence throughcollaboration, individual contribution and understanding. The groupaim is to use all resources to achieve high level of academicperformance while maintain a healthy work and life balance. Thegreatest strength of our 5 man group is the group understanding andcohesion. Every member understands there may be difference emanatingfrom the fact that we come from different diverse regions andcultural background. Despite that fact that we all come fromdifferent countries we have managed to use our diversity to build astrong relationship and social cohesion. In the first and secondmodule we have successfully completed academic tasks with efficiencyand in a timely manner. This has enabled us pursue our other interestoutside the school and allow the group members to concentrate onnetworking and career goals.
Eventhough we are a diverse group with multiple career and racialbackgrounds, we have always been committed to embrace ofmultiplicity, learning from one another and relying on individualstrengths to better the team a whole. Unity and cohesion of our grouphas been supported by effective communication that has gone a longway to averting and solving conflicts. Over time we have discoveredthat conflict is inevitable within our group but we have alwaysendeavored to learn from disagreements and move forward quickly.
Thetwo Indian have been very vibrant in coaching and helping me achievemy academic requirement. At least, I feel that I learn a lot fromthem, for example presentation skills, writing skills even jobseeking skills which are not related to the group works. I gain a lotuseful knowledge from their coaching about my academic work and lifein general. Furthermore, my team member, especially the two Indiansalways encourages me when I am nervous and lack courage. They do notapportion blame if we do not do well in the group performance. Theyjust point out changes that we might make in future to improve ourperformance and achieve our goals. Even we dissatisfied with theperformance of one member, we do not discuss their faults in public.
Weaknessof the Group
Thethree members ’3 soldiers’ in the group do not participateactively in the activities of the group. Without the support of the"3soldiers”, the group cannot get a good grade at the finalassessment. The Indian play the leading role and this means thecreativity and ideas of the other three members are smothered. Thecreativity of our group is greatly hindered by the fact that most ofthe time I do not add value to group discussion Normally I am veryshy and quiet I seldom actively voice in the group discussion unlessI am asked to contribute or answer a question. I think the role Iplay in the group is more like complementary role or performerbecause I seldom play the leading role in the group.
Theeffectiveness of our team is affected by the fact that some of themembers are unable to draw their own expertise and skills tocontribute solutions and ideas towards the realization of ouracademic goals. The vibrant Indians in the group make some memberscow and dither to express themselves fearing that they may be wrongor their ideas have no value. The team norm has been inhibitinginstead of encouraging contribution.
Iam a very optimistic person and can find positive elements even insituation that are terrible and overwhelming. This positivity is whatkeeps me moving enabling me to work to accomplish my education goals.I have a very positivity expectation about the future.
Iam able to relate positively with all members of the group, because Ihave recognized that individual members bring different perspectives, opinions, ideas and skills into the group.
Myparticipation in the group discussion and activities is substantiallycurtailed by the fact that English is my second language. Thus meansthat I have to work extremely hard to maintain the same level ofperformance as the other members in the group. Secondly,my other main weakness is that I am not confident enough. I find itparticularly difficult to present my ideas and work in public. I lackcourage to be in a position to air my opinion and voice my ideasespecially when the group leader and other member of the group whoare more fluent in English challenge my viewpoint. This means that Ihave to compromise in many situations and buy the opinion of myteammates.
Emotionaland Social Competencies Inventory
Forthe emotional awareness, I am open to the feedback but I am bit edgywhen it comes to maters that affect personality. I understand mylimits but I do not know how to effectively modify. For theachievement orientations, I can set a long term development goal butI lack measurable steps to fulfill the goal.
Forthe emotional control, I am not the rational person. I cannoteffectively control my temper and impulse. I am not able to cope andhandle stress appropriately. Normally I am cannot be able to calmlyhandle stressful events and this has invariably affected myperformance both at the personal and group level. For empathy, I amempathic person and I can understand others based on theirperspective. Also, I am a good listener and have enough patience tolisten the complaints from others. I also can accurately readpeople’s mood according their actions even eye sights. For theorganizational awareness, I can quickly read the power relationshipin the group. For example, with the short time, I figured out thatthe two Indians are the leaders in the group and if we follow them,we will get good results because they are strong and competitive inthe group.
Forthe conflict management, I seldom argue with others. Whenever adisagreement ensues in the courses of discussing academic work in thegroup, I normally compromise even if I think that my point of view orides is the most apt in the prevailing circumstance. I do not like toargue and anytime I detect that an argument is getting past theboundary of constructive argument, I try to de-escalate the imminentconflict.
Iseldom coach others in the MBA group. But I always try to support andmotivate others whenever I feel I have the ability to help them reachtheir goals. I am also good at finding someone’s strengths, and Iwill tell that people whenever I detect where their strength lies, sothat that they can feel motivated. I also care about other people’sdevelopment. For the leadership, I prefer transformationalleadership. I prefer leaders who are able to identify my strengths aswell as able to motivate, communicate, support to ensure mysubordinates perform well and further make sure that the whole teamget the goal we want. I do not like use rules or penalties to forcepeople do something. Teamwork, I think is very important for thedeveloping of the group. I normally maintain the friendlyrelationship with others and try my best to create the cooperatedclimates in the group.
Ihandle the Same Situation Today
TodayI can handle the situation differently from how I used to in my firstand second modules. First I have gained enough courage to be inposition to air my viewpoint even in public. In addition I can beable to put my point across even in the face of members whocomparatively are more experienced than me. I can also be able toencourage less active group members to air their ideas and opinions.I can handle arguments with more stability and I would not becompelled to compromise especially when I feel that my argumentsholds water and can help our group attain better results.
