is never easy. It is one of the distressing experiences that amarried person can face. is the dissolution or termination ofa marriage union. If legally married, the couple may cancel andreorganize their legal duties and responsibilities, thus dissolvingtheir bonds of matrimony under the rule of law. However, divorceprocesses vary from one country to another. There are many issuesthat results to divorce such as conflicting parenting styles, finances, abuses, drug addictions, different ideas, among others. Some of the issues incorporated in a divorce case include childcustody, parenting time, child access and distribution of property. In most cases of divorce, finances, parenting, living arrangement, household jobs are some of the stressful experiences that divorcedcouples face. Unfortunately, if a couple happens to divorce, childrenare the most affected. Currently, divorce is a common ongoingphenomenon in most societies. Indeed, the modern society iswholeheartedly accepting it and fully supports single parenthood. Infact, the modern society considers single-parent family as a normalfamily structure. There are positive and negative consequences ofdivorce in families.
Thereare several advantages of divorce. Firstly, divorce allowsindividuals to keep their own space and enjoy immense freedom(Cornelia 45). A marriage is an agreement between two people ofdifferent genders to live together as husband and wife. Whenever oneperson tries to control the other, this may cause conflicts in amarriage. Therefore, divorce is a newfound freedom to the individual.A divorced person is no longer questionable on his or her moves anddecisions. They are entirely free to make any decision and movearound depending on their wish. They have no one, including theirspouses, to account to except themselves. Distinctively, a persondoes not have obligations to consider before taking any step. Theycan attend any event, gathering, or party, and enjoy themselveswithout the fear of offending the other partner.
Further, divorce offers an individual a chance to find out new and longlasting relationship. In most divorce cases, the couple does not loveeach other, hence they may choose divorce to give one another thechance to find true love. Most people get married when they are stillyoung, and later, they figure out the spouses they want (Rawson 72).In such a situation, a divorcee will take more time to reflect ontheir previous marriage and its problems. In the meantime, they canevaluate the part they played in the breakup and how to avoid it in afuture relationship. Eventually, they figure out the characteristicsthey want in their partners.
Lastly, the divorced individuals enjoy more privacy after divorce (Cornelia102). Married couple shares most of their property since they stay inthe same house. Whenever one goes out, he or she cannot keep it asecret from a partner. After a person gets a divorce, he or she cantake a bath, talk on the phone for a long time, or walk around thehouse without the fear of interruption. Living apart allows a personto do whatever he or she wishes without the other disruption from theother spouse. This also enhances personal growth. Every relationshipteaches the participants about their characters. Hence, a divorceperiod is a good time for a person to reflect on good and bad momentsof the previous marriage. Accordingly, a person takes time totreasure the best times they had while learning from thedisheartening moments. In the process, the person becomes extremelywise and strong.
Onthe other hand, divorce has its own shortcomings. Firstly, divorcehas a negative impact on children. As much as the divorcees are happywith their separation, children are affected negatively. The depth ofdivorce effect varies from one child to another and may depend on theage of the child. According to psychologists and researchers, youngchildren suffer from anxiety and depression when they separate withtheir parents. On the other hand, infants and toddlers experienceappetite suppression and moodiness. Although they do not comprehendthe situation, they have difficulties in adjusting to it. For thegrown up children, above eighteen years, they can act out with angerand suffer from depression. In addition, some children tend to loveone of their parents while hating the other (Rawson 65). Forinstance, if two parents divorce and the children are left with theirfather, these children love their father more than their mother. Theyfeel divided loyalty and love between divorced parents. They thinkthat their mother hates them and do not care about them.Correspondingly, a child from a divorced family may developcommitment issues up to adulthood. According to research conducted bya student from the University of Massachusetts, 46% of adults broughtup from divorced families remain single for the rest of their lives. Most of them do not believe in love and they always fear to committhemselves in relationships. As a consequence, they undergo stressand depression and may develop suicidal thoughts.
Secondly, divorce has a negative psychological effect on the divorcee.According to Rogers (p. 70) divorce is a major source of stress. Theyurge that a divorce is the start of all psychological problems.Adults suffer from emotional imbalance such as unhappiness, highlevels of anxiety, depression, among others. Eventually, the mentaland emotional well-being is damaged and affects a person’s wholelife. A study published in the “Journal of Marriage and the Family”shows that most divorced men and women have high premature mortalityrate than married people. In addition, the following years afterdivorce are full of mental health disorders that can also contributeto early death.
Lastly, divorce has negative economic effect, both at the individual leveland national level (Rogers 78). According to research by Family andAdvocacy Organization, family and divorce processes cost Americancitizens more than one hundred billion dollars. For example, thelegal process of attaining a divorce costs thousands of dollars. Inaddition, there are other legal costs that a couple has to pay beforethey are pronounced divorced. The research also discovers that mostof the divorced people undergo financial constraints with more than50% declining in their living standards. For instance, if a persongets a divorce and yet he or she is unemployed, the living standardlowers now that he or she is independent.
Itis the hope for every newly-wedded couple that their marriage willlast forever. Unfortunately, some of them end up breaking. The end ofa marriage feels like death to some people whereas others feels likea new life. Though it is hurting, the divorcee should focus on thepositive side of divorce rather than waste time focus on the negativeoutlook of divorce and sink into a deep depression. After all, divorce does not mean the end of life but rather the beginning of anew life.
