CreativeResistance Music Piece
Resistancehas been part and parcel of the society. This is especially since thebeginning of proper organization of human beings as a uniform groupof people with shared values, norms and cultures. Needless to say, these groupings incorporated specific laws pertaining to the mannerin which individuals are required to work, function or operate withrelations to each other. Nevertheless, many are the times when thenorms were not agreeable to every individual especially consideringthat rules and regulations are made in line with their agreeablenessto the majority or at least the dominant proportion of the society. However, it is well noted that the contemporary human society hasseen the emergence of new techniques for voicing one’s views aboutthe varied aspects of the society. In the past, the most populartechnique for raising concern or resisting was violence (Fritz23). Nevertheless, recent times have seen nonviolence occupying acentral position in resistance efforts, with creative arts being someof the most prominent ones. This has given rise to creativeresistance, which is defined as the use of varied creative techniquessuch as songwriting, graphic arts, puppets, re-mixing and crafting inan effort to voice one’s resistance to certain aspects of thesociety within which one lives (Fritz39).
Oneof the most distinctive songs that aims at resisting patriarchy inthe contemporary human society was done by Planningtorock also knownas Jam Rostron. She combines the floor-filing dance music withcomplete feminist rallying calls, while using vocal effects tode-genderize her voice.
Inthe song, Jam states “Patriarchallife, you’re out of date/Patriarchal life, get out of the way!”.With the repetition of this particular facet of the song alongsidethe rhythmical drumming, the song is aimed at laying emphasis on thefact that the new world has absolutely no place for patriarchy. Whilethe singer is a feminist activist, the song acknowledges that in thepast patriarchy was the only way in which the society could beorderly. Indeed, this is the only way that law and order could bemaintained. There were duties and obligations that ensured that menexploited their energies more and ensured their dominance in almostevery facet of the society. However, the society has evolvedimmensely in the contemporary human society. Indeed, since the SecondWorld War, women have been forced to take up roles that wereprimarily done by men. Unfortunately, the Second World War ensuredthat all men or at least a large number of them were in thebattlefield, in which case the women had to fill up for the absenceof men. Unfortunately, this did not change even after the end of thewar as women had tasted some freedom. They could simply not go backto being housewives as they had already become more or lessindependent on their men. This created a new era for the women andthe society at large. At no one time would the society have a placefor patriarchy. Of particular note is the fact that patriarchy wasalso similar to racial segregation or discrimination with the onlydifference being the basis for discriminating the individuals.Indeed, if discriminating against individuals on the basis ofreligion, race, or ethnicity, then it should be illegal todiscriminate on the basis of gender. It is only time that meritocracyis used as the only basis for determining the capabilities of anindividual.
