COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE CONCEPTS OF STYLE AND TRAIT 4
Leadership has largely been known to be the power to influence otherpeople who follow the leader towards the achievement of a set goal orobjective. Leaders are also said to influence the cohesiveness of theorganizations that they lead. It is imperative to point out that thestyle of leadership that a leader adopts has a tremendous impact onthe success or failure of his leadership. Equally, the traits of aleader are essential and critical in the delivery of effectiveleadership (Bass, 2008). Research has indicated that for one to be asuccessful leader, there are various things that a person must be,know and do.
There are various traits or attributes that leaders ought to have ifthey will have to be successful. These trait include charisma, ethics, knowledge, skills, and beliefs among others. It is criticalto note that by being a manager or a boss in an organization does notmake one a leader. The manager must incorporate the leadership traitsthat are required to lead and inspire a team to meet theorganizational goals. Knowledge and skills are significant traitsthat every solid leader must have. It is clear that there is no waythat a person can lead a group or a team to achieve a certain taskwithout him or her having the skills and knowledge of doing the taskinvolved (Bass, 2008). The trait of being charismatic ensures thatthe leader appealing and charming. This is a critical trait inensuring that the leader inspires his or her team.
It is also imperative for a leader to have the attribute of ethics. For instance, when a person is a leader a public office such as apolitician, it is imperative for the leader to show high ethicalstandards if his or her followers have to abide by the set ethicalstandards. For example, the leader must not be corrupt is he or sheneeds the followers to desist from corrupt affairs.
Leadership traits for a solid leadership go hand in hand with theconcept of style that the leader adopts. Good leadership traits suchas honesty, skills, knowledge, charisma and ethics will not lead tosolid leadership if the style of leadership is not effective. The twoconcepts, which are the concept of style and trait are two differentaspects. Whereas traits are said to be the personal attributes thatensure a leader offers solid leadership, the concept of style isviewed as the way of directing people and motivating them towardsachieving certain goals (Bass, 2008). There are various styles ofleadership just as there are various traits of a leader. A solid formof leadership demands that the style of leadership be democratic. There are other styles of leadership such as the authoritarian andPaternalistic. However, democratic form of leadership where theleader engages the subordinates in decision making is considered asthe best concept style of leadership that ensures solid leadership.
It is, however, imperative to note that the democratic style ofleadership must go hand in hand with various traits in order toensure solid leadership. The traits of honesty, competences, knowledge, intelligent, courage and imaginative must be incorporatedinto the democratic style of leadership in order to realize a solidform of leadership (Bass, 2008). It is evident from the abovediscussion that the concepts of trait and style in solid leadershipare two different aspects. However, research has indicated that thetwo concepts must work hand in hand if solid leadership has to berealized.
