Democracy demands that all people are treated equally and offeredequal opportunities in terms of employment and income distribution.Whereas the United Kingdom has been in the frontline fostering fordemocracy, it is increasingly becoming evident that there are hugegaps in terms of income amongst the various groups of people thatreside in the United Kingdom. Research has indicated there arevarious causes of income inequality in the UK. To start with, the UKpopulation comprises of people with varying levels of education. As aconsequence, income generating opportunities are distributedunequally (Chen & Zhou, 2008). People with high educationalqualifications are employed in prestigious positions where they areoffered handsome pay packages. On the other hand, the group that haslow educational qualifications are offered low paying jobs such ascleaning and running errands.
The level of unemployment in the United Kingdom has been rising overthe years. The rates of unemployment are imminent amongst the youthwhere they have reached the highs of 15%. Research has also indicatedthat the overall unemployment rates in the United Kingdom are at 7%.This high rates of unemployment are a key cause of income inequality.The numerous youths between the ages of 20-25 years are surviving onunemployment benefits from the government (Champernowne &Conwell, 2007). The high levels of unemployment have created a hugegap between the rich and the poor in the United Kingdom.
Gender has also been a significant factor in the income inequalitybeing experienced in the UK. Men have been largely favored by theemployment system in the UK. Research has shown that men are 21% morethan women in the employment sector (Welch, 2006). Furthermore, womenare argued to be earning less than men. In this regard, women areviewed as the minority group. It is vital to point out that womenhave been associated with the home chores and therefore their chancesfor participating in incoming generating activities are limited(Champernowne & Conwell, 2007). As a consequence, there has beena huge difference in terms on income in regard to gender. Men areseen to have made huge strides towards financial stability whilewomen seem to lag behind. This has contributed an income inequalitybetween males and females.
The United Kingdom is host to people from all over the world. Thismeans that there are people of different races such as Africans,Asians, Indians and Arabs. Research has indicated that people fromother races rather than the British white people are at the receivingend in terms of wealth distribution in the United Kingdom (Welch,2006). The form of education that the foreign races have access to isconsidered to be of low quality. As a result, they are unable toaccess opportunities for prestigious employment. It is evident thatemployment opportunities are given to the British whites as apriority (Champernowne & Conwell, 2007). Men and women from otherraces are paid less salaries than British white people. This hasresulted in a huge income inequality in the UK. It is also vital topoint out that different races such as blacks in the UK havemaintained their culture where they have opted to have women remainat home as care givers, while men work to provide for the family(Wilkinson & Pickett, 2010).
Retrogressive form of taxation has been another main cause of incomeinequality. This is a form of taxation that favors the wealthy.According to this form of taxation, the more an individual earn, thelower the income tax. This form of taxation has been extremelyharmful to the poor who are subjected to huge taxes in comparison totheir salaries. This has led to a huge gap in income.
The government has a number of options that it can apply in order toreduce and eventually eliminate the income inequality in the UK. Thegovernment must implement the progressive taxation form which allowsfor increase in taxation with increase in pay. This would ensure thateach and every person is taxed according to what he or she earns.Secondly, the creation of employment opportunities especially to theyoung people could be extremely effective in reducing the incomeinequality. The government must provide incentives to factories,which in turn would be significant in the provision of employment(Hauser, 2009). In addition, it is imperative for the government toset a minimum wage that the lowest civil servant can earn. This wouldhelp in bringing a balance between the amounts that the wealthy andthe skilled earn and what the unskilled workers earn.
Lastly, the government must ensure that there is equality and thatpeople are not discriminated or denied employment opportunities onthe basis of their gender or race. Women must be provided withopportunities just as men are provided. On the same note, people whoare not Briton whites must also be provided with employmentopportunities. It is also paramount for the government to harmonizethe salaries of all the civil servants regardless of their race orgender. Employees who are on same employment ranks must be paid equalpay.
