Organizationchange entails any considerable modification to some branch of theorganization. Change can be brought by forces that are eitherinternal or external to the entity. Generally, planned change is morepreferable compared to reactive change. Change in an organization canbe hindered by different factors that are existing and emergent.However, it depends with the leadership capability in realizingchange in an organization. The way leadership is approached iscritical in the realization of an organizational change. This paperconcerns managerial issues and leadership in the realization oforganizational change. The paper will use the book, SteveJobs Isaacson, indiscussing the issues of organizational change and leadership. Thepaper will commence with lessons from chapter 13 and 17 of the book,and then a brief summary of the book will follow. In addition, thereview of the book will be provided.
Lessonsfrom Chapter 13
Accordingto this chapter, Jobs viewed himself as a rebellious upstart to theestablishment of IBM during the early periods of Apple. However, Jobsalso rivaled within his own company and rivaled with the Lisa groupin shipping his product faster (Isaacson, 2011). Though the Lisagroup shipped its products first, it eventually flopped due to itsmodest features, while Apple became left and relied on the Macintoshfor the future advances. Meanwhile, Jobs became adamant on havingcomplete control of every part of the Macintosh project. The lessonlearnt from this scenario is that leadership is not gained easily,but an individual has to be firm on what she/he wants.
Anotherlesson learnt from this chapter is that management is not an easytask, but the success of the management purely depends on theleadership. This can be realized from the chapter, where the Lisagroup shipped its products first, but due to its modest features, itflopped. On the other hand, although Apple did not do it, under theleadership of Jobs, Jobs believed that he had the leadership requiredin overseeing all the parts of the Macintosh project. Because of hisleadership, he was capable of succeeding in management. Anotherlesson learnt from this chapter is that management of a changeprocess is exceedingly vital. The Lewin model offers a generalstandpoint on the steps involved in the change process, although acomprehensive model is more effective. Individuals tend to resistchange due to uncertainty, different perceptions, and feelings ofloss. Participation is an essential method in overcoming thisresistance. Jobs was capable of overcoming the resistance to changethrough his willingness to succeed in the Macintosh project. Thisimplies that an individual acting as a leader must be in a positionto overcome resistance to change. In case they do not resist change,it is likely that organizations would remain static.
Differentchange techniques or interventions can be used. The most common onesentail changing organizational structure and design, people, andtechnology. There are numerous specific areas of change within eachof these broad categories. Reengineering is the fundamental redesignof all phases of a business in order to achieve key gains in service,cost, or time. It is sporadically needed in offsetting entropy. Thecentral steps are creating goals and strategies, conveying theengagement of top management, developing a sense of urgency,commencing with a clean slate, and balancing bottom-up and top-downviewpoints (Isaacson, 2011).
Lessonsfrom Chapter 17
Accordingto this chapter, by the time Macintosh became launched, Jobs hadbecome a tech icon. While the Macintosh developed a lot of buzzduring the early times, sales slowed eventually since people came torealize limitations concerning some of the machines. By this time,Jobs’ cumbersome personality alienated much of Apple and JohnSculley had been requested to reign in Jobs more often. In theprocess, Apple lost some of its excellent engineers. In the end, thefriction led into a full-on power fight amid Sculley and jobs, wherethe board finally sided with Sculley. However, Jobs toyed with theplan of staying with Apple in running AppleLabs, which was a divisioncharged with creating fresh products, but eventually Jobs made adecision to leave Apple. Oneof the lessons learnt from this chapter is that leadership is acompetitive process. Individuals will usually become interested inbecoming leaders in a certain position in an organization. Forinstance, in case there is a managerial position in an organization,there is a possibility of individuals becoming interested in theposition this will bring about competition in acquiring theposition. This is evident in the chapter since there was competitionamid Sculley and Jobs. Leadership should be viewed as a noncoerciveprocess that helps in shaping an organization in the desired way.Sometimes, leaders may not have a common idea as depicted in thechapter. For instance, according to the chapter, Sculley and Jobs haddifferent ideologies on how to manage the organization.
Anotherlesson learnt from this chapter is that, while seeking or in aleadership position, there are individuals that tend to support acertain leaders, while others tend to oppose the leader. Differentfactors may bring about the idea of opposing or supporting a leadersuch factors may include leadership qualities, political influence,and transparency. Political influence and leadership qualities arethe chief factors that influence the support or dislike of aparticular leader. In this chapter, Sculley and Jobs are two leadersthat are depicted to have different liking and dislike by theindividuals in the organization due to their difference in influenceand leadership ideologies. However, political influence tends todominate the liking for theses two leaders since the directors of theorganization are influenced to have a liking for Sculley.
Besides,another lesson learnt from reading this chapter is that when thereis a competition in a leadership position, there is a possibility ofdeveloping or declining the capability of an organization. This isbecause, the competition may result in either employees becomingmotivated ors de-motivated. This is because employees may eithersupport the changes in an organization or may dislike them. In casethey dislike the changes, there is a possibility of employeesquitting their positions, which is a loss to the organization. Thisis because the cost of acquiring other employees may be exceedinglyhigh. In this chapter, there is a depiction of discontentment as aresult of competition in leadership. Because of this, some of thebest engineers of the company quit their jobs, which is an immenseloss to the organization (Isaacson, 2011).
Inaddition, another lesson learnt from this chapter is that personalityis of immense significance to a leader. Leaders should have thepersonality of leading and desire of attaining success. This iscritical for leaders in order to ensure that an organization has thecapacity of surviving during the times of trouble.
