MarchingSalukis Band is located in Carbondale, Illinois. It was founded byDonald Canedy. It consists of both men and women and it is theofficial marching band of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. This band is generally known to be performing at the football gamesof the SIUC. It is also involved in the home coming parades of thesame institution of SIUC, Carbondale Lights Fantastic and the DuQuoin State Fair. It is directed by George Brozak and has amembership of about 110 musicians. Marching Salukis band hasperformed in many events, some of which is the performance theystaged in the public visit of the former president of the USA, BillClinton in Carbondale. Other performances include the halftimeprograms for the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and St. LouisCardinals. One of its famous songs up to these days is the ‘Go,Southern, and Go’. I argue that Marching Salukis should beincluding in our music program.
WhyMarching Salukis Should Be Included In Our Program
MarchingSalukis is known for its salute style. This can be observed in theirsong ‘Saluki Salute to America’. It is a very patriotic medleywhich gives way to the ‘‘America the Beautiful’’. It has alsoincorporated different instruments in the collections such astrumpets in their song ‘‘The Star-Spangled Banner’’. Thissong has been performed by two solo and includes the antiphonaltrumpets. The song ‘Salute to America’ has been loved by manypeople around the country and the group has performed it in manyfunctions such as the ‘‘1982 World Series’’. MarchingSalukis has been known for their military style of music. This hasmade it evolve since those early years through directorship of DonaldCanedy. The style has seen them stand out and stay grounded up tothese days.
Contributionto the Music Industry
Thisgroup has contributed a lot in the industry such as their dressingcode. A good example is the introduction of tuxedo jackets and alsothe homburg hats, which were adopted as uniform by many musicians. Inaddition their contribution to music saw marching drills beingincorporated to big band, jazz and also rock music. The band’searly arrangements are still favorites of many music lovers. Thesearrangements were done by a great Grammy- winning musician GlenDatum. He was one of the trombonists in the band. His contribution isfelt in modem generation. These contributions are weighty enough forthe band to be included in our program
Itis arguably correct to say that many music bands are established inthe world but they don’t go far. The disintegration of music bandscan be felt in almost every country. However this has not been thecase with the Marching Salukis. Since its inception in the early1960s, there has been change of directorship. In spite of this, thegroup has remained strong and continues to entertain its funs. Itwas directed by the Michael D. Hanes from early 1960s until 1997.
Howeverduring this period NickKoenigstein got an opportunity of leading the group for one year whenits director was on a military duty (tour). The group has had morethan five directors since 1960. One aspect that has made it remainstrong is that most of these directors are experienced and some ofthem have been with the group for the longest time. The currentdirector, George Brozak, is an experienced musician with the MightySound of The Southeast, where he happened to be the director.
Thisis an aspect that cannot be ignored. This group has featured numerousinnovative ways of music especially in early days. Some of theseinnovations include piano such as a baby grand piano on wheels.Others included the percussion carts which are also wheeled such asthe famous ‘‘Rhythm on Wheels’’. The way they introduced aviolist, mostly a non-musician who plays a dummy instrument can’talso be forgotten. Other changes that the team has been trying to doare in the uniform they wear. There have been many alterations ontheir uniform. Each and every subgroup participating in theperformances has its own uniform. The uniform‘s design was howeverchanged in 2010, when the new SIUC stadium was being opened. Theuniform was altered to include a tuxedo style top, which goes in linewith the vest, jacket, bow tie and ruffle front shirt with black pants. The changesin their uniform are to signify the modern definition of thetraditional style of tuxedo-style attire of the Marching Saluki. Theyhave incorporated fedora in their attire instead of the commonhomburg hat. These, together with other innovative ways of playingmusic, makethem qualify in our course program.
Oneof the admirable aspects of this group is the way they have organizedthemselves over time. This can be observed in the number of bandsthey have introduced to cater for the musical demand in differentaspects. In this category we have the Saluki Pep Band. This band isresponsible for any home basketball game involving both men andwomen. The membership is open to all students of the university.Another subgroup that features in this is the saluki dazzlers, whichwas established in 2011. This team is officially given theresponsibility of dancing in all performances of Marching Salukis. Italso includes halftime, parades, and pregame, among other functions.
Theabove factors could be of great help in our course work since we canlearn a lot from the inception of the group in early 1960. However, most importantly is the contribution that the Marching Salukis bandfounders have brought to the industry. This knowledge is sofundamental in our music course.
