Effectivenessof techniques that makes a story humorous
Exaggeration, embellishment, and regional dialect are some of the techniques thatcan make a story humorous. Exaggeration is a way of representingsomething in an excessive manner. Expressions or words associatedwith exaggeration include hyperbole, overstating, maximizing, overstating, among others. Exaggeration is used in “The NotoriousJumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Simon Wheeler and Rev. LeonidasW. Smiley were some of the characters from the story. According tothe story, the narrator needed some information from Wheeler aboutRev. Leonidas W. Smiley who used to live in Angel’s Camp (Twain20). Wheeler admitted he did not knew Leonidas Smiley but hadinformation about Jim Smiley
Wheelused a lot of exaggeration when giving a story about Jim Smiley.Wheeler regarded Jim as a man who would bet on anything. Heexaggerates that Jim would even bet on human life which cannot be thecase. Wheeler also uses some exaggeration when giving a story aboutJim’s “bull pup” named Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson was avery small dog and used to win many dog fights, but, one day the dogended up with no legs and died. Wheeler exaggerated by saying the dogwas genius and had opportunities in life because he was muchtalented. On this, Wheeler creates humor on showing how the dog wasvital. Wheeler also exaggerates about the frog that Smiley caught andtrained it how to jump high. He creates humor by referring the frogas straight-forward, modest and had many gifts (Twain 22). Heexaggerates more by saying the frog had specialty of jumping higherthan all frogs one could ever see.
Embellishis addition of ornamental or fictitious details on something orsomebody. Use of embellish is useful in a story since its gives moregood or bad details about a character, therefore, creating a humor. From the story, Wheeler referred Smiley as really old and slow, andhad asthma. However, Smiley would head start, the stroll along untilshe ends the race. Suddenly, she would barely start wheezing andbolting like crazy until she would win. The description portraysembellish showing that although Smiley was old and sick, she wouldget into any competition until the end (Twain 23). A humor is createdon how she managed to do that while old and sick. From the storyabout the frog, the frog is described to be straight-forward, modest, and had many gifts. The frog would jump high from the ground andwould even manage to catch flies. Fictitious information is addedabout the frog creating a humor on how would he manage to catchflies.
Regionaldialect is classification of people according to their geographicalarea or languages. Regional dialect also classifies people accordingto their level of education. From the story of The Notorious JumpingFrog of Calaveras County, there is a regional dialect used. There isa contrast between western and western people United States thoughnot specifically contrasted. The contrast is between the refinednarrators from the East, the educated and the uneducated althoughslick characters who lived in the West populating Angel’s miningcamp (Twain 25). The characters from the West adore a good tall tale, while the narrator seemed regarding it as tedious and pointless. Fromthe story, the narrator refers Wheeler as boring and talks adnauseam.
