Voicerecognition software recognizesthe user`s voice whatever is dictated into the microphone willappear as an electronic, word-processed document.
Voicerecognition software allows the user to operate a computer byspeaking into it, allows dictation of text and commands, eliminateshandwriting and spelling problems, and always spells correctly.
Oncea significant financial investment, voice recognition programs noware more widely available and are included in many word processingprograms. Both Windowsand Macintoshoperating systems have voice recognition built in. Therearevarious voice recognition programs available for optimalperformance, all requiredisa computer with a significant amount of memory, processor speed, thespeech recognition software, a headset/microphone, and a superiorinterface connecting to the sound system.
Theobvious advantage of voice recognition technology for students withlearning disabilities, who have difficulty expressing themselves inwriting, is that it circumvents the transcription process entirely. However, it is by no means a panacea for writing difficulties. As with all technologies, voice recognition technology is most effective when combined withskills in punctuation, sentence skills, and paragraphing.
Thereare both advantages and disadvantages in using voice recognitionsoftware:
Advantage:Users don’t have to use a keyboard to inputinformation.Disadvantage:The software has to be trained to recognize the user`s voice. This isaccomplished by reading passages provided by the program.
Advantage:The software learns to recognize a user’sunique speech patterns.Disadvantage:Users have to speak distinctly in order for the software to workwell. If the user has non-standard speech, tends to run wordstogether, or mumble, the training process maybe long. Somepunctuation must be dictated.
Advantage:The software spells every word correctly.Disadvantage:The software spells every word it recognizes correctly. Typically, itrecognizes 5-20 percent of words incorrectly. It cannot recognizehomonyms.
Advantage:Users can write as quicklyas they speak, 100+ words per minute.Disadvantage:While users may talk that fast, what they produce will probably bedisorganized and grammatically incorrect.
Advantage:Users can produce a large amount of writing, which they can thenedit. The software will read back to users what they have written, which helps with proofreading.
Disadvantage:Users have to edit.
