Assignment1 question from: Module+3 4+Youth+Identity+and+Consumption
Ihave always wanted to be identified as a person who is tech-savvymeaning, very good in technology and always update with what is thelatest in IT. While there are many other people in our place I wantedto feel different from them, so I thought that being a tech-savvywould get me what I really wanted. In order to do this I asked myfather to buy me a smartphone. It was not easy to convince my fatherbut he did give in to what I wanted and bought me one. I usuallycarried the smartphone at school so I can show it to my friends. Itwas a wonderful experience, actually, because I had some of myclassmates talk to me. They also wanted to know what the phone can doand I showed them. It was during this time that I really felt I wasdoing something unique and worth noting and that I was doingsomething for other people that are good like teaching them abouttechnology. So I felt I was tech-savvy. It was not so long when Ihave developed new friends with other people who have the samesmartphone as mine. We were exchanging some applications and somesongs too. I felt that we were really good friends.
AsI look back on this past experience, I think there are two things Igained. The first is satisfaction of my desire to be considered atech-savvy individual, and the second is new friends. However, I alsolost some of my old friends, and a lot of time for doing school work.Just for the record, I spend more than 6 hours per day just gettingto the internet and looking for some updates and applications, so Ihad no more enough time to do some school work like I did before.
Thestore which I visited was the Kohl’s. When I went to their store Isaw a lot of clothes for both men and women for different ages. But Inoticed that they had more clothes for teens and fathers. Althoughthey also sell some jewelry, they were less in number and the entirerooms are filled with clothes almost. There were shoes for both boysand girls, and there was also a portion of the store which sells somehome stuff like beds and sofas. In other words, the store haseverything that a family will need, except food. I visited theirwebsite at http://www.kohls.com/and receiving page I saw a lot of clothes for both boys and girls. The first layer of clothes was for girls actually and the majority inthe page was for girls. The bottom part of the page was dedicated forfathers, although the items there are something that even boy teenswill like, like the sports stuff. What is noticeable in the webpageis the picture of the girl who was wearing really pleasant clothesbut they are like not for her age but for older women. So I thinkconsumerism means attaining your desires. I think what the image ofgirl says to those who see it is that, young girls can become likeadults – they can become or project that they are already of legalage and are entitled to be listened to by other people. I alsonoticed that the clothes for girls are very different from those ofthe males. The clothes for the girls are really feminine and cute, but the clothes for the boys or fathers were sportier so consumerismis also a way of youth to establish their identity. So being morelike men is being sporty and being more like ladies for girls iswearing cute dresses. So consumerism is also a way of the youth tomake themselves unique and at the same time establish what group theybelong to – such as the age that they are trying to project withtheir clothes.
Overallthe store is sending a message of what a family should be like –that each member of the family must be unique and this uniqueness orcoolness can be achieved by buying their merchandise. This is notnecessarily good of course, so I think people especially the youthshould find a way to get out of the appeal of coolness, andfortunately, in my opinion, there is. That way is to buy thingsaccording to what you have and what you just need. This is very hardbecause people are exposed to such concepts starting when young, butI think it is possible.
