Our Casa* program is designed around Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophical observations of what children need in order to develop natural tendencies toward self-motivation, control, relationship with others, mastery of their environment and independence.
The Prepared Environment, the teacher, and the exquisitely attuned sensitivities of the children produce together a community of self-sufficient, curious and joyful children who eagerly participate in the Montessori Education.
* Casa refers to a Montessori preschool program. It is derived from Dr. Montessori's first class, called Casa dei Bambini in Italian, or Children's House.
1. Practical Life: Everyday Life Skills, Social Graces, and Movement
are all part of the Practical Life Area through fun and interesting activities
such as pouring, spooning, transferring objects using tongs, tweezers or a baster.
Scrubbing tables, chairs and floors, as well as ironing, washing clothes and
polishing, all promote care of the child's environment by doing the things he sees
adults do every day. This area also promotes concentration and attention to a task. The child learns to do for him/her self.
Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie his shoes, dress or undress himself, reflects in his joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity, which is derived from a sense of independence. Dr.Maria Montessori
The young child strives to be independent and to do things for
herself. Through the Practical Life activities the skills needed to be independent are learned
and habituated. Learning social graces, what to say and when, help the child
to learn to be a part of everyday society. These are continued during our
Lunch Program as well. (For further information plus photos, please click here:

2. Sensorial Area: This area helps to develop the child's senses and
awareness of the world around her through the use of specialized materials
designed to isolate individual qualities such as colour, size, shape, weight,
texture, and more. This is a very "hands on" area, each activity involving the whole child. (For further information plus photos, please click here:

The hands are the instruments of man's intelligence . Dr.Maria Montessori
3. Language Area:
The Montessori Language Program is a phonetic based approach to reading. Language is such a huge part of our world, from speaking, to isolating sounds and then into
reading. The Montessori child essentially "teaches" himself/herself to read through learning the letter sounds, writing words using those sounds, and finally reading those words back. It is an
exciting time when a child "bursts" into reading! We use cursive letters at KMS because the formation of these letters is smooth and easy for writing. It is very easy to move from cursive to print,
but much more difficult to move from print to cursive..(For further information plus photos, please click here:
Language )
4. Mathematics: We begin with manipulatives, then slowly lead into
abstract concepts. Beginning with numbers 1-10, 11-99, and 1-1000, the children
learn linear counting and recognition of numerals, which then leads into
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division concepts. This is done
through fun activities which involve lots of movement, manipulatives and group
work. As the child matures, individual work is encouraged and abstract learning
begins to take place.(For further information plus photos, please click here:
Mathematics )
5. Cultural Area: This area introduces the child to the world beyond the classroom. Global awareness, geography, science, botany, music and art activities are all available to the child on
a daily basis. Specific countries are often highlighted, with special activities surrounding those countries. Art activities are individual, and encourage experimentation. Music is expressed
in song, listening, and playing rhythm instruments. The children gather in a group everyday to listen to stories, sing, or play special games.

KMS currently is not running an Elementary Montessori Program. If you would like us to start an Elementary, please contact us. We need a minimum number of interested students to open an Elementary classroom. Children in the Elementary Montessori classroom will have the opportunity to work in the following areas:
Language: a continuation of their Casa experience, at whatever stage they are when entering the Elementary Program. Further work in Grammar, creative writing, projects, and penmanship.
Math: a continuation of their Casa experience, at whatever stage they are when entering the Elementary Program. Advanced math includes geometry, fractions, and abstraction of all operations.
Advanced Practical Life: activities which continue to encourage children to take care of their environment, and learn new life skills.
Cosmic Education and Peace: this sets the stage to develop more caring and peaceful citizens. It is prevalent throughout all the areas of the classroom.
The Sciences: Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Science Experiments.
Geography: continued work with the Montessori Maps and advanced activities, learning about our earth’s physical geography
Health, Nutrition and Physical Education:
Montessori Great Lessons: these lessons are specifically for the Montessori Elementary program. The children will gain an understanding of the history of the universe, with a focus on man’s role.
History: the history of life on earth to present day
In summer KMS offers a Summer Camp program for preschoolers only
(three-to-five-year-olds), one week at a time, for seven or eight weeks. Each
week will follow a theme, and will run from nine a.m. to twelve p.m. Please
